What is Blackstrap Molasses?
Blackstrap molasses is a highly-concentrated, very dark molasses with a robust, somewhat bitter flavour. Like our fancy molasses, it is a pure product, it contains no added preservatives and is a nutritive sweetener.
Many people are fans of the stronger, more robust flavours and use it in recipes such as baked beans and gingerbread. In addition to its deep flavour, blackstrap molasses is recognized as a source of iron and calcium.
How can we use Blackstrap Molasses?
In anything sweet, like pastries, cookies or cakes, you cannot substitute Blackstrap Molasses directly for Fancy molasses unless it is used in small amounts or you offset its bitterness with other sweeteners. Blackstrap is best used when you want a deep and robust flavour in stews, marinades, baked beans , BBQ sauces and much more. In these recipes, you can substitute blackstrap molasses for fancy molasses using a 1-to-1 ratio. Adjust to your taste preferences and don’t hesitate to experiment by adding more if desired.
Our Best Blackstrap Molasses Recipes
All these recipes call for traditional fancy molasses. However, you can substitute the fancy molasses at a 1:1 ratio or mix the two kind of molasses. We suggest that you try and experiment until you find the ratio you like the most!
