Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2/3 cup Crosby’s Fancy Molasses
  • 4 squares bitter chocolate (unsweetened)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 3/4 cup sour milk or sour cream

Chocolate icing:

  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Cream butter, add sugar gradually. Add baking soda, salt and vanilla.
  2. Mix in molasses and melted chocolate. Beat in eggs. Blend in flour alternately with sour milk.
  3. Pour batter into two well-greased, lightly floured 8″ pans or one Bundt cake pan
  4. Bake at 375°F for 25 minutes
  5. Let the cake cool for at least 30 minutes and pour icing and it is completely cooled

Chocolate icing:

  1. In a large microwavable safe bowl melt the butter 30 seconds at a time until fully melted.
  2. Add in the cocoa powder and whisk until smooth.
  3. Add in the confectioners’ sugar and milk.
  4. Whisk until smooth.
  5. Add more milk if needed to get the desired consistency.
