How to make your own pumpkin pie spice:

Pumpkin Pie Spice is everywhere in October and November. It’s the seasonal blend that didn’t even exist when I was little, not in name anyway, although I’m sure many bakers were mixing up their own versions according to spices called for in their favourite pumpkin recipes.

If you look for the blend on the shelf in your local grocery store you’ll likely discover that pumpkin pie spice kind of expensive. And it isn’t always easy to find either.

After one unsuccessful grocery store search for the spice blend I decided to go looking for a recipe. I found the beginnings of a blend in the Crosby’s recipe archives (used for Gingerbread Pumpkin Bars) and then multiplied everything.

The great thing about this pumpkin pie spice recipe is that it’s a blend made from spices you likely already have in your cupboard. The one exception is if you go with the variation below and add a little mace.

Variation: Add 1/2 tsp. of mace to your blend (a wonderful suggestion from a reader).

Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe

  • 4 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 4 tsp. ground ginger
  • 3 tsp. ground allspice
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves

Whisk together in a bowl and store in an airtight container.
