Top 10 molasses recipes of 2019

I always love this annual blog post, the chance to dig into my website data to see what recipes (or blog posts) have been the most popular each year.

Sometimes there are a few surprises but it’s reassuring to know that the old favourites make it to the top 10 list year after year.

Old fashioned gingerbread, six-week bran muffins, molasses baked beans and oatmeal brown bread are always on the list (albeit this year the ranking changed).

You’ll notice that this year readers also gravitated to blog posts that gathered some of my favourite recipes into one spot. My blog post featuring 10 healthy side dishes for summer is in the top three for 2019, and also sits in that spot every month of the year, no matter the season.

See below for readers’ favourite recipes of 2019. A top 10 list with two bonus recipes (the count for #10, 11 & 12 were so close).

The more things change the more they stay the same…

When I tallied the most popular recipes on this website for 2018 the list looked vaguely familiar. That’s because all of the recipes, save one, were on the Top 10 list for 2017, and many were on our Top Recipes for 2016. It just goes to show that when you’re craving old fashioned comfort food, you’ve come to the right spot.

So here they are, in ascending order (beginning with the top recipe):

Another old recipe that I grew up with. It is the closest thing to hermit bars that we sometimes treat ourselves to at a local bakery.

This easy recipe is made in a 9″ x 13″ pan so can feed a crowd.

Oatmeal Brown Bread

You can never have too many recipes for a good oatmeal brown bread. This is another recipe I grew up with and ate most Saturday nights with baked beans.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

This recipe is decadent and not too heavy on the date flavour. The texture is lovely and you can’t go wrong with the caramel sauce. Tuck this recipe away for a special occasion.

Effortless Oven-Baked Ribs

When I was little my mom would make this recipe with whatever ribs she happened to find at the grocery store – pork or beef. The recipe works well with either.

Refined Sugar-Free Banana Cake

Refined sugar free banana cake is great for snacking but you can also frost it with naturally sweetened cream cheese icing to dress it up a bit.

Pubnico Molasses Cookies

This is one of those classic, old fashioned, soft (but not too soft) molasses cookies. Also known as Long Johns, Moose Hunters, Fat Archie’s and Lumberjacks.

Pubnico Soft Molasses Cookies: Soft but sturdy molasses cookies have been around for a long time. They travel well and are filling so are as practical as they are delicious.

This is the kind of muffin that works for breakfast, for school lunches, and for an after school snack.

Bonus recipe:

Chocolate Gingerbread Bundt Cake

Beautifully spiced and a firm crumb this cake is easy to slice and travels well. Even better, it doesn’t need frosting. Just a sprinkling of icing sugar will dress it up enough.

Are you craving comfort food?

It appears that we all are or at least we did in 2017. Judging from our Top 10 molasses recipes list, it’s the old-fashioned recipes that we’re drawn to. From brown bread to baked beans, gingerbread and muffins, old-time favourites are as popular as ever.

I’d like to give a little shout-out to my mom since half of the recipes on this top 10 list are recipes that I grew up with, all family favourites that my mom has been making since I was a child. Thanks mom :)

Healthy Blueberry Bran Muffins

I was one of those kids who always loved bran muffins and more so when blueberries were tossed in. This is a lighter version of a classic recipe.

Blueberry bran muffins are light-textured and moist. They're made with a generous amount of bakers bran (natural wheat bran) which is the key to their lofty texture. Blueberries and molasses keep them extra moist.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

Be warned, you just might eat the entire batch in one evening. (Recipe includes a delicious sauce.)

Slow Cooker Baked Beans with Sausage

This is a extra easy recipe that you can change up using different kinds of sausages. Definitely a cut above beans & wieners.

The Best of the Blog in 2014

Do you have any favourite recipes of 2014?

Did you discover any new recipes that became instant favourites and made it into your regular cooking repertoire?

There are all sorts of ways to take stock of the year as it comes to a close. We can recall travel highlights, personal accomplishments and special events.

And we can think about what we ate.

We have a tradition in my family of writing notes alongside recipes in cookbooks. Sometimes the notes are about adaptations that we made to the recipe but other times they’re little reminders: “Betsy’s birthday cake 1999”, “Mom’s Birthday ’98”. I love how these little notes jog my memory in the same way a photograph might.

I’m not nearly as good as I used to be when it comes to recording events in the margins of my cookbooks. But it’s never too late to recommence — it is New Year’s Eve, after all.

In the meantime, courtesy of technology, I bring you the 10 most popular recipes on the blog in 2014, beginning with the most-viewed recipe, Blueberry Muffins.

Here’s to another wonderful year of gathering in cosy kitchens and around generous tables. May 2015 be another year of sharing.

Happy New Year!
