non-brunch ideas for Mother's Day

My Mother’s Day request? No brunch please.

Breakfast, I love. And a leisurely dinner with a glass of wine or two is my favourite way to celebrate anything, or nothing at all. But brunch is like penance. By 11:00 a.m. I have moved on from breakfast food (I’m an early riser) and not yet in the mood for dinner, so a brunch buffet is simply wasted on me.

I won’t knock brunch for those who love it. Any meal celebration that gathers friends and family around a table to enjoy good food and good company is worthwhile.

Looking for non-brunch ways to celebrate Mother’s Day? Consider these Mother’s Day food ideas:

Indulge in something extra special for breakfast:

Molasses Walnut Scones

I consider scones the perfect snack food. There’s something about the texture that I find satisfying and comforting and they can be filling enough if made with good flour (whole grain). This molasses walnut scones recipe takes scones to a whole new level with a generous handful of nuts and sweet glaze. Just right for a mid-morning snack but even better eaten warm from the oven on a weekend morning.

Molasses Sticky Buns

For this version I have combined my favourite sweet dough with a sticky molasses syrup and amped-up the cinnamon to create the most heavenly treat that still qualifies as breakfast food. Definitely worth getting out of bed for.

Buckwheat Flapjacks with Molasses Maple Syrup

Pancakes and Flapjacks are treats in our house and this recipe, made with local buckwheat flour, is a favourite.

Dinnertime indulgences that non-cooks can master too:

Spice-rubbed Ribs with Molasses Slather

Slow braised, beautifully spiced ribs with a scrumptious slather. Mmm, this is a Sunday indulgence. And they are super easy to make

Effortless Oven-Baked Ribs

Just like the recipe title says, these are easy-peasy and a family favourite for everyone.

Molasses Lime Grilled Chicken

This is a lovely dish that tastes like spring. Seasoned with a simple molasses marinade with garlic, lots of fresh lime juice and zest, a touch of heat from the spice and sweet molasses.

Enjoy your Mother’s Day, how ever you choose to celebrate.

This Soaked Ginger Cake is decadent beyond its appearance. It may seem like an old fashioned gingerbread with a simple brown sugar sauce –  and it is – except that it’s really infused with the buttery sauce. Served with more sauce on the side this can become an over-the-top dessert.

Chocolate and ginger – such a lovely flavour pairing, especially in this extra moist cake. Made with stout beer our Guinness Chocolate Gingerbread has a texture like no other. It needs nothing but a light sprinkling of icing sugar.
